Polk teen bailed out by 'Dr. Phil' crew member
By
Rita Farlow, Times Staff Writer
In print: Monday, April 14, 2008
By late Sunday, just one of the eight teenagers charged in the videotaped beating of another teen remained behind bars.
Brittany Mayes was released from the Polk County Jail on Sunday afternoon on $33,000 bail, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
Six others — Kayla Hassell, Brittini Hardcastle, Cara Murphy, April Cooper, Zachary Ashley and Mercades Nichols — were bailed out Friday night.
Staff members of television psychologist "Dr. Phil" McGraw paid for Nichols' release.
In an e-mail, Louis DiCenzo, a spokesman for McGraw, said it was not unusual for the show to help potential guests pay for transportation, lodging and other expenses incurred to appear on the show.
But staffers were not authorized to bail out Nichols, DiCenzo said:
"In this case, certain staff members went beyond our guidelines (re the bail being paid). These staff members have been spoken to and our policies reiterated. In addition, we have decided not to go forward with the story as our guidelines have been compromised."
On Sunday evening, Stephen Schumaker was the last of the eight to remain in jail.
The teenagers, who range in age from 14 to 18, are facing kidnapping and misdemeanor battery charges for the March 30 assault against 16-year-old Victoria Lindsay.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office has said the girls were upset with Lindsay about comments she made on the Internet.
Lindsay, of Lakeland, suffered a concussion, bruises and temporary hearing and vision loss from the attack.

Do I detect a green tinge of envy, St. Petersburg Times? Here's a headline for you: "98 pound poverty-stricken teen rescued from lynch mob by Dr. Phil" Didn't like him before. Do now.

This is disgusting! I also dont believe that for one second that "Dr." Phil didnt know they were going to bail these cheap thugs out of jail. I am never going to watch his show again now that I know how the inside works.

Everyone boycott the Dr Phil show! This animal Mercades should be in jail still. Notice how she had to hide her face when being released, what a coward.

In defense of Dr. Phil, the story says that his staff made a mistake. I doubt he even knew about it till now.

Assault and attempted murder; one well-placed kick on this young girl and she would have been killed. These "children" should be tried as adults and sentenced accordingly. Media should not interview the attackers; rather, shu

When I heard of this I was in absolute disgust. These individuals are now known and may now meet vigilante justice by some bigger and tougher teens.

Just like tv to invite the criminal. Why isn't he helping with the years of counseling Lindsey will have to go through to overcome the assault?

This hienous act was premeditated and to think our youth is capable of inflicting verbal, physical, and emotional trauma on another teen who will be scarred for life, they ALL should be tried as adults and thrown in jail and throw out the key.

I cn't believe the Dr Phil show would bail one of those girls. It is a shame what is going on with the kids today, they all should stay in jail and pay for what they did, so others will know you just can't do what you want, hope Linday is
