WESLEY CHAPEL — A dispute between two neighbors that may have begun over a missing PlayStation 3 ended Wednesday with one man dead and the other running from the law.

Edward K. Stoddard Jr., 28, shot Douglas Abrams, 26, in the driveway of a neighbor's house Wednesday, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

Abrams was airlifted to a Hillsborough County hospital. Emergency personnel did chest compressions on Abrams as he was moved from an ambulance into a Bayflite helicopter.

He eventually succumbed to his injuries. Deputies did not have a time of death.

As of late Wednesday, Stoddard had not been caught. Deputies believe he is armed, dangerous and on the run in a green 2003 Dodge Ram truck.

Neighbors said Stoddard thought Abrams stole a PlayStation 3 and television from his mobile home in March.

"Eddie thought Dougie had broken into his house," said Donna Powers, 26, a neighbor and longtime friend of Abrams'.

She didn't believe Abrams stole the goods.

The two grew up together. Abrams was short, thin and everyone called him "little Dougie," she said.

They used to go to mud holes together and, on purpose, drive in deep enough to get stuck. When they were kids, they threw firecrackers at cars on the Fourth of July.

"Most 16-year-olds do stupid stuff," Powers said.

She had heard through the neighborhood grapevine that Stoddard might beat someone up, but she never believed he would shoot someone.

"I knew he was crazy, but not that crazy," she said.

Stoddard's girlfriend of six months, Karissa Shultz, moved in with him in March.

"I'm dumbfounded," said Shultz, 23. "I don't know what to think."

She was sitting on the back porch Wednesday morning, talking to her mom on the telephone, when the shooting occurred.

"I heard a couple of bangs," she said. "Eddie came running inside, grabbed his keys and left."

Shultz said Stoddard left his phone at the home and has not tried to contact her.

"He didn't say 'I love you' or anything," she said.

Stoddard had a temper, Shultz said, but she also said she didn't think he had it in him to shoot someone. She did not know if he kept a gun in the house.

Both Stoddard and Abrams have criminal pasts.

Abrams was arrested for the first time at age 14 on armed burglary charges. Since then, he had been arrested almost 30 times. Charges included larceny, burglary and battery.

Stoddard was arrested most recently in March on charges he fired a gun from inside a car and eluded police, among other things. He was also arrested in the past on charges of battery and cruelty toward a child.

Shultz said Stoddard was in jail the night the PlayStation 3 went missing from his home.

OK, a good person doesn't shoot and kill someone then flee like a coward. Your definition of a good person is really construed. A good person doesn't commit 30 crimes and run from the police. Just like typical people in Floriduh defending c

My deepest sympathy to Doug's family, especially his parents. There is not much worse than losing a child, no matter what the age or the reason. Love and God bless you Doug and Becky.

like i was saying...you would all find out that all those 30 times of being arrested were from driving with out a license and petty stuff. breaking in the house was when he was 14. Everybody has comments about something but in a case like this would

I hope people realize that we live in the only remaining industrialized society in the world where anybody can whip out a gun and start murdering people, just for the hell of it. The world is growing up, while America is regressing. Wake up!
by Mike Apr 24, 2008 6:01 PM

by Kiki Apr 24, 2008 11:44 AM
What a surprise ending for two fine upstanding habitual criminals! It is impressive that a person arrested 30 times still inspires enough confidence in neighbors that he wouldn't steal from a friend.
by Britt Apr 24, 2008 11:44 AM
Although they both sound like winners to me; its sad how one of them had to die over something so ridiculous.
by John Apr 24, 2008 11:44 AM
Ok, so it begs an answer... Arrested 30 times and still on the street? Arrested for firing a gun from a car and still has a gun?
by John Apr 24, 2008 11:44 AM
Many lives have changed because of a stupid video game. This is insane. When will all of the craziness in this state end?
by jimmy Apr 24, 2008 11:44 AM
Stoddard is another mad dog who's been in/out of jail all his life. This time the jig is up, I'd say.
by Jim Apr 24, 2008 11:44 AM
OK...We know what truck he's driving...what if he gets out of his truck? How about a picture? We should know what armed and dangerous people look like.
by joanne Apr 24, 2008 11:43 AM
what a mess over a playstation game. what a way to die. and what a way to spend the rest of your life in jail for. there is no sense to be made of this just stupidity thats it. my heart goes out to there families on both sides.
by John Apr 24, 2008 11:43 AM
And these are supposed to be grown men?
by GrimReaper Apr 24, 2008 11:43 AM
"Stoddard was arrested most recently in March on charges he fired a gun from inside a car and eluded police, among other things. He was also arrested in the past on charges of battery and cruelty toward a child." SO MUCH FOR GUN LAWS .....
