Detours: a country in search of direction
On the eve of the election, a reporter and photographer set out for Washington, via America. We tell stories from seven towns, touching on seven issues from politics and real life.
Friday Night Rewind It doesn't matter which team you cheer for. We've got video previews of every high school football program in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando County.
PINELLAS PARK — The mother raccoon must have thought it was a good place to raise a litter.
Turns out, it was the fire chamber of a tar machine. When roofers lit it Wednesday morning to repair a roof at Northside Hospital, the singed mother and a baby ran out. Another was stuck inside, crying.
The crew called a supervisor, who decided the animal couldn't be saved and started the heater again. The raccoon burned to death. And Eric L. Hill, 49, went to jail. He was arrested on a charge of animal cruelty, a third-degree felony that carries up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
"How do you express yourself at the feeling of loss and outrage that you have in a situation like this?" said Gary Morse, spokesman for the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the agency that made the arrest. "I don't know how to express that."
Wednesday night, Hill, of 3738 67th Ave. N in Pinellas Park, was released from jail on $5,000 bail. He said he was shocked at the charge. He thought firing the kettle again was better than letting the injured animal suffer.
"What I thought would be the humane thing to do was just turn the burner on as high as I could go and get the animal out of its misery," he said.
Vernon Yates, who runs Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in Seminole, said raccoons are notorious for giving birth in strange places — the attics of houses, covered boats and cellars. Hill said the tar kettle hadn't been used for a while.
Yates took in the lone surviving baby, which is about 3 weeks old and fits in the palm of a hand. After a visit to the veterinarian, Yates said it's too early to tell if it will recover. He said the raccoon lost some fur and smells like singed hair. He's thinking of naming it Lucky or Miracle.
"It'll be a miracle if he lives, really," Yates said. "You figure the heat that comes through this thing has got to be like a crematory."
Times researcher Caryn Baird and writer S.I. Rosenbaum contributed to this report.

He's lucky it wasn't fruit rats. Probably would have killed 5 or 6 of them.

On duty cops get paid the same if they are pulling you over for speeding, eating donuts or arresting this guy. Same for the judges and court personnel. Quit this tax payer whine.

I suppose the woman who had the 'Gator in her house would've been wrong had she shot it? This guy makes logical sense, in what he did! Unfortunately, he only makes sense to SOME of us! Believe it or not Raccoons are dangerous. Been to Ft. D

The Good book says these raccoons have souls - Job 12:10. Torturing an animal is a red flag of a sociopath.

Odd how this report says Eric Hill felt it was more humane to continue to cook the animal alive, yet other reports say he felt - trying to remove the animal was wasting too much time". So now, what is this disgusting act going to cost him?

To me, accidentally running over a squirrel is not the same as BURNING AN ANIMAL ALIVE.

Kay, the humane thing might be to put this animal out of its misery, but it is not humane to burn it alive. Get a grip, woman. This animal was BURNED ALIVE !!

I wonder if this man got struck by a car and seriously injured, would he want "the humane thing" done to him? Then the driver could back up and finish the job of squishing him to death! That sounds appropriate!

Ooh. Tax Payer has put his foot down. Well I pay 'em too ... and research shows animal abusers often don't hold any life sacred, including humans. I see prosecution of roof boy as a preventative measure.

It was a racoon people. Would you have felt the same way if it was a snake? The guy DID the humane thing. I hope the next time you "accidentally" run over a squirrel while driving someone is there to arrest you. Give this guy a break.

This "man" should be punished to the full extend of the law. How cruel! Research does show that people who will treat animals this way will also treat other people in a cruel way.

Every single one of you people swat flys, kill mosquitoes, and have roach spray in your cabinets. Probably eat meat and wear leather shoes as well. Get off your high horse and look in the mirror. If you can't walk the walk......

This has NOTHING to do with wasting tax payer dollars and, by the way, I am a tax payer and would gladly pay for this person go to trial. This is about playing GOD. To burn this little creature to death? Poor judgment!

Oh please !!! Comparing a baby racoon to a human baby. How inherently assinine. What would any of you have done with a partially burned and dying animal that couldn't be retrieved? Oh, I know. Let it suffer for several hours. That'll

RE, surely you must be kidding. Sometimes it is the humane thing to do and you shouldn't have to have a vet's license to do it. Farmers/Ranchers/etc have done this since the beginning of time. Sometimes medicine is heartless alternative.

Are you kidding me? They actually wasted tax $ and law enforcement's time on this? OK, so what he did was probably cruel but come on. When the whole world is falling apart, are animal cruelty charges because of a racoon really that newsworthy?

Hill would not have done such a thing if it had been a human being stuck in there. People can be so callous when it comes to the treatment of animals and it is a disgrace to the human race. We are responsible for treating them humanely.

Put this guy in the same category as the men who beat seal pups over the head with a club and skin them alive in front of their mothers. Dispicable. Animal cruelty laws are far too lax in our society.

Disregard for the life of an animal is worse that disregard for the human life. The beasts of the wild were displaced by our ceaseless and often ruthless taking of the lands they called home. Throw the book at the guy, and best of luck to the baby!

Why do people always assume its better to kill an animal than try to rescue it? Would you do this if it was a human baby in the same situation?
