EDITOR'S NOTE: Correction appended.

ST. PETERSBURG — Michael Lee Montgomery was a serial rapist who preyed on vulnerable women, police said.

His targets included a prostitute and at least one mentally retarded women. He picked victims up in a maroon Chrysler New Yorker, raped them and forced them to commit horrific acts "of a deviant sexual nature," police said.

Montgomery, 48, was arrested Thursday afternoon on three charges of sexual battery, one charge of kidnapping and two charges of false imprisonment. A fourth rape victim has not been cooperative, police said.

St. Petersburg and Gulfport police are still investigating, and authorities say they think Montgomery has more victims who have not come forward.

The rapes stretch back to last summer, but police say they were not able to connect the cases until recently, when someone called with a tip about Montgomery.

Montgomery's victims were able to identify him in a photo pack, police said. On Thursday evening, he was talking to investigators.

As police led Montgomery to a cruiser he told reporters: "It's all lies."

In addition to picking up women on the street, police say, Montgomery also frequented telephone chat rooms. In one case, police say Montgomery pulled a woman into his car through a window and drove away, so she couldn't escape.

"The crimes are heinous," said police spokesman Bill Proffitt. "If I were to describe it to you, you would be very disgusted."

Montgomery lived at 2412 53rd St. S, across the street from the Gulfport Police Department. He has a criminal record that stretches back at least 28 years, with numerous arrests in Sarasota and Manatee counties, state records show. He has been arrested on charges including battery, aggravated assault, carrying a concealed weapon, fraud and trespassing.

In 1996, Montgomery was arrested in Sarasota and accused of kidnapping a woman from the street, raping her and beating her with a car jack handle before she escaped and flagged down a passing car, according to a Sarasota Herald-Tribune news story.

Montgomery faced charges of kidnapping, sexual assault with a weapon and aggravated assault, court records show. But authorities dropped the kidnapping and sex assault charges, and Montgomery pleaded no contest to one count of aggravated assault, records show.

It was unclear Thursday what sentence Montgomery received in that case, or why authorities dropped the charges.

Times staff writer Stephanie Garry and researcher Caryn Baird contributed to this report. Abhi Raghunathan can be reached at araghunathan@sptimes.com.

CORRECTION: Earlier versions of this story published online incorrectly identified the make and model of the vehicle police believe Michael Lee Montgomery used.

Karen Gregory's murderer is convicted and behind bars. The courts got it right.

He was never convicted of a sex crime, hence, the GPD had no reason to keep tabs on him. That being said, why were the kidnapping and sexual assault with a weapon charges dropped in the previous arrest?
by Jim Apr 25, 2008 12:57 PM
I am just sick to hear about this. People usually feel safe here, and to find out that he has abused vunerable women is appalling.

Revolving door justice..overcrowding..gender bias in the courtroom..he will be back doing it again..victims are in therapy longer than offenders are incarcerated..
by Tonya Apr 25, 2008 11:54 AM
Are these charges going to get dropped? I think that he should have already been locked. I suppose it is a good thing for both parties involved that the victum in 1996 survived, That way Micheal got a slap on the wrist..... WHAT A JUSTICE SYSTEM!
by Dave Apr 25, 2008 11:54 AM
Are we going to slap his hand and let him go AGAIN?

When I was raped in Sarasota in 1986, this guy was just ONE of the known rapists released in the area. Since then, he's pled out and been released, over and over. Might as well let him go again, like they did with my rapist. There is no justi

Are there no editors on your staff? There is no Chevrolet New Yorker model. If it is a New Yorker, it is a Chrysler.
by A.H. Apr 25, 2008 8:44 AM
And why was he out on the street with a rap sheet like that? Lock him up, castrate him, and never let him see the light of day! And, yes, I AM a woman.
by Laurie Apr 25, 2008 8:44 AM
I hope he gets to 'enjoy' all the things in prison that he did to those women!
by Kris Apr 25, 2008 8:44 AM
What's the matter Montgomery-did your momma not love you as an infant? Did your folks realize from conception that you really deserved to be thrown in the trash with the rest of their garbage? Castrate this man and now.
by Pete Apr 25, 2008 8:44 AM
Chevrolet doesn't make a model called a New Yorker. That would be Chrysler. I'd suggest better researchers.
by Bobo Apr 25, 2008 8:43 AM
Lived across the street from Gulfport PD huh? Why hasn't Gulfport PD been absorbed by the Sheriff??? What a bunch of rocket scientists.......They had a description of the guys car for nearly a year...Hello!!!!
by jan Apr 25, 2008 8:43 AM
Criminals really don't have much to fear from prosecutors and judges anymore. The law is a joke to them, and unfortunately the rest of us are catching on as well. Used to be violent crimes guaranteed a stretch, but not anymore.

Was he around when Karen Gregory was murdered?
