SPRING HILL — The man who ran down a Spring Hill resident as he was taking his garbage to the curb of his Elgin Boulevard home in October has been charged with DUI manslaughter.

Weeki Wachee resident James C. Morris, 21, was booked into the Hernando County Jail Friday and was released on $50,000 bond.

Morris was driving his 2003 Ford F 150 east on Elgin between Deltona and Mariner boulevards just before 5 a.m. on Oct. 10, when he crossed into the other lane and drove into the yard of 25-year-old Darrell Newberry just as Newberry was carrying a trash bag to his mailbox, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Newberry's girlfriend, Sherri Collins, heard the impact from the couple's garage, where the two had been relaxing in the pre-dawn neighborhood quiet. Collins heard the boom and ran out into the darkness shouting for Newberry but she couldn't find him.

She saw a black truck pulling out of a yard two houses down and turning back onto Elgin. As Morris approached Collins in the truck, he asked her if everything was all right. She screamed at him that he had hit Newberry.

That is when she called 911. Newberry died from his injuries.

Newberry did not live to see the first birthday of his and Collins' son, Demarcus, which came five days after the accident.

Great job by our Great Legal System, Sheriff and States Attorney, only took 7 months to get this done. If this was a murder it would probably take them 4 years.

Hopefully, justice will be served. It is hard to believe there are such cold blooded people. So afraid to be accountable for their actions.Your life MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO THEM. My heart and prayers are with the Collin's family.

Toxicology results, collection of evidence, gathering witness statements, developing photos, properly drawing a true diagram of the scene. Speaking to the State Attorney regarding the case."This isn't a TV show" things can't be d

He is probably going to be walking around for another 6 months to a year until the trial ends. It won't even start for as long as that. He is out on bail.

Only in the State of Florida could it take this long for law enforcement to take proper action. What a joke. This guy should have been arrested and charged that day.
