ST. PETERSBURG — They began as neighborhood bullies who beat up other kids, loitered in parks and crashed parties for beer. Pretty soon, they had a name: the Haines Road Cru.

But in recent years, authorities say, this group of friends who grew up in the Haines Road area gradually branched out into more serious crimes: They beat people with metal chains, many carried firearms and they started robbing businesses.

The gang is blamed for a string of terrifying pharmacy robberies that culminated last week in the shooting of a St. Petersburg police detective.

Police say that the 36-year-old detective was shot and seriously wounded when he confronted two men who had just robbed a Blockbuster at 5100 66th St. N April 30.

Four of the five people arrested in connection with the shooting and pharmacy robberies are members of the Haines Road Cru, according to police and prosecutors. They are Joseph Hollings, 18; Danielle Karlau, 19; Danny Knight, 17; and William Jaeger, 18.

Velislav Matzov, the 19-year-old accused of shooting the detective, is not a documented member of the Haines Road Cru, but has been hanging out with the gang in recent months, police and prosecutors said. Hollings is accused of robbing the Blockbuster with Matzov, and Karlau is accused of driving the getaway car.

"They began as a group that was more interested in power and respect than making money," said Aaron Slavin, a prosecutor with the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office who specializes in gang prosecutions. "It appears that they've escalated into more serious crimes of violence."

Slavin said there have been several successful prosecutions of leaders in the Haines Road Cru — it also goes by Haines Road Crue — but the gang has not disintegrated.

Although police and prosecutors say the Haines Road Cru meets the legal definition of a gang under Florida law, it doesn't exactly resemble well-known, traditional street gangs such as the Bloods or the Crips.

Detective Peter Yarbrough, who works in gang intelligence for St. Petersburg police, said the Haines Road Cru doesn't appear to be bound together by initiation rituals like beat-ins. The main bond holding them together is that many grew up in the same neighborhoods in the Haines Road area.

Police estimate about 25-30 people belong to the Haines Road Cru; many went to Northeast High. They include men and women, and members come from different racial backgrounds. Police started paying attention to them in 2005, when they began seeing the same names over and over in arrest reports.

"With these commercial armed robberies, they've taken that next step," Yarbrough said. "Before, it was fist fights, broken noses. … It really does show how they've progressed from when they're 15 or 16 years old to now."

Police say the string of pharmacy robberies began March 13 at a CVS at 294 37th Ave. N. Police say four people entered the store with guns. Two of them went to the counter, getting $300. Two others went to the pharmacy for prescription drugs such as OxyContin and Xanax.

On April 15, the robbers struck again, this time at a CVS pharmacy in Pinellas Park. Police said the three men wearing black clothing and face coverings held up two clerks at gunpoint while stealing cash and narcotics from the pharmacy. Hollings, Jaeger and Matzov each face a count of armed robbery in that case.

And on April 28, police say, the robbers hit a Walgreens at 3077 54th Ave. S. In that robbery, Matzov and others took cash and narcotics, forcing employees to open the drug cabinet. They took prescription drugs such as hydrocodone, OxyContin and methadone, police said.

In the Walgreens robbery, police say, Karlau walked into the store and let her fellow culprits know when the business was empty of customers so they could move in.

"When they're going to the pharmacy, they're taking money and drugs," said Slavin, who is prosecuting the gang members.

Addicts generally just go for the drugs, Slavin said. The tendency to go for money suggests that the Haines Road Cru was interested in selling the stolen drugs.

Kelly Jaeger, 37, acknowledged that her son was a member of the Haines Road Cru. But she said they were just a group of friends, not a gang. She also said her son was innocent of the charges he faces, including two counts of armed robbery and one count of commercial armed burglary.

"They've all just been friends their whole lives," she said. "They called themselves the Haines Road Cru, but we've got 6-year-olds in the neighborhood who call themselves that. … They're not a gang or anything."

by NEHI Parent May 9, 2008 3:09 PM
Why did the writer feel the need to say these kids attended Northeast? What was the point? I can guarantee you they did not attend NEHI. Instead, they are most likely drop outs! It's a slap in the face to the good students to do attend that school.
by Christina May 9, 2008 9:40 AM
And, Kitty, I agree. My mother would have my head! Heck, she'd have my head if I did that at 30 years old!!! Parents have to get their heads out of the sand and start being PARENTS!
by Christina May 9, 2008 9:39 AM
Cindy, they are not trash because they are poorer. They are trash because they rob places and fire guns at people. THe cops were watching them b/c of other crimes they committed. This is not a tragedy for the kids. They chose it.
by someone who knows. May 9, 2008 9:39 AM

Drugs, armed robbery, guns, masks, violence, tattoos. These criminals are a product of our deteriorating society. Family life has been disintegrating, society and morals too. Why are we surprised? Are you raising your kids well? Bet you're not

Hainez Road Goonz must be another bunch of low life thugs. Why else would he be anonymous? Also, being "good friends" with losers makes you a loser. The gangsta lifestyle is a criminal lifestyle. No sense of right or wrong, just do as you please.
by kitty May 8, 2008 4:05 PM
Cindy, get over yourself! My mom was widowed with 4 kids under 12. If we did the things these little jerks were doing, my mom would have called or driven us to the police herself.
by Cindy May 8, 2008 3:48 PM
Lisa, I agree more rounded reports are needed. And how is the officer?? The MEDIA sensationalizes the stories to sell and make a name for themselves. The rounded truth doesnt sell. These harsh people would'nt have any ammo to trash others. Sad&true!
by Cindy May 8, 2008 3:27 PM
To all you cruel, judging people. May a tragedy of this magnitude never fall upon you. And Roger I am glad you are so perfect but to be calling people trash because they are poorer and had a harder life is pretty low. God blesses all....even you!
by Holly May 8, 2008 3:09 PM
Instead of working hard to get ahead in life; they've decided to become a bunch of losers. It's learned behavior!
by Tax Payer May 8, 2008 2:47 PM
So, when is the Great State of Florida going to make them the "Starke Chain Gang Cru?"
by Chip May 8, 2008 2:45 PM
Carla's right, this is not a gang. It's a group of punk sissy losers who can't function like normal people. Put them away so real thugs can give them hands on experience in prison socialization. These pansy wannabe gangstas are a waste
by A. Ghast May 8, 2008 2:30 PM
TISK, TISK, TISK.....shame on all of you. Don't blame the parents unless they are given back the right to punish bad behavior. Time out is not a deterent.
by Al May 8, 2008 2:29 PM
Wow!!! What a bunch of Haines Road DIRTBAGS!!! Get a freaking job or go to school you losers!!!!!!!
by Lisa May 8, 2008 2:28 PM
No reports have stated why a detective was at Blockbusters. Give us a more rounded report!!! We need his side of the story & more info as to how he is doing in the hospital. God help this mixed up nation!! We've strayed from our basic root
by joe May 8, 2008 2:27 PM
its not really a gang and i dont think no one undersatands that. it is just a group of friends.... yeah some made mistakes? but just because of that you cant call it a gang? im sure everyone when they were young had their lil"click"??????
by Kim May 8, 2008 2:22 PM
WOW these children need to grow up and the ignorant parents (like the one of the 6 year old future gangbanger) need to get a clue and actually learn how to parent! This is only going to get worse.
by barry May 8, 2008 1:58 PM
Six year olds who call themselves by the same name are future gang members. They grow up thinking that is acceptable behavior because that is what they see everyday. That mother is out of touch with reality.
by ------ May 8, 2008 1:38 PM
You all have no clue what your talking about.
by ------ May 8, 2008 1:35 PM
You all have no clue what your talking about.
by Roger May 8, 2008 1:35 PM
They aren't a gang they're all trash and Haines rd is a dump where they all belong, actually at least these 5 are where they belong. It starts at home especially when you have 6 year olds part of "the cru" where are the parents?
by ANONYMOUS May 8, 2008 1:33 PM
Im good friends with the men that got arrested. They came from good families and the article that was written was false. They were never bullies, the cops just made them out to be thugs. The people are judging stuff they dont know. HAINEZ ROAD GOONZ
by by L May 8, 2008 1:28 PM
A well written article. This is a sad situation for all involved, familes, friends, etc. Maybe if adults today would give teenagers a little time of their day. What a generations we could create.
by anndor May 8, 2008 1:27 PM
I hate to tell you, but the Haines Road Cru has been around since my mom was a kid back in the 50's. Her and dad used to talk about it all the time.
by Butch May 8, 2008 1:25 PM
Isn't amazing that when these pieces of crap get arrested their mothers always say they are good kids and are innocent. Cops need to quit picking on them I guess.
by Beth May 8, 2008 12:07 PM
Nothing but punks!!!!
by susan May 8, 2008 12:07 PM
