ST. PETERSBURG — A 14-year-old girl was driving around a parking lot when she hit and killed a 5-year-old boy, crushing him against a concrete block wall at the Pinellas Point Apartments on Wednesday evening, police said.

The trouble started when the girl took the keys to a dark blue Volkswagen Cabrio to retrieve her school books, but instead took the car for a drive, according to St. Petersburg police.

Shronda Donahue, 33, the cousin of the boy's mother, said Kevon Wilson was "just a vibrant, bright little boy." He was his pregnant mother's only child, she said. He liked to ride a green bicycle around the complex.

"I saw my little cousin under the wall, and he just slumped over," she said.

Carlita Davis, 43, who lives in the apartment complex with her four sons, was sitting on her porch just after 7 p.m. when she heard the crash. She ran down to the scene and saw the car pin the boy against the wall.

Davis tried to get the girl driving the Cabrio to put it in park, but instead the girl sped in reverse, backing the car up against the building. It rested with its rear wheels suspended in a planter. She looked at the girl, who returned a blank stare, Davis said.

Davis ran to the boy, whom she knew from the apartment complex in the 2100 block of 62nd Place S. The boy liked to catch lizards and play sword fights with other children in the woods near the wall, she said. When Davis saw him, his head was injured and he was limp. She hoped he would be okay, though her heart told her he was gone.

"I couldn't help him," Davis said.

Witnesses said a passenger in the car fled and another boy was injured, but less seriously.

The taped-off crime scene was chaotic Wednesday night, filled with traffic homicide detectives, the apartment complex's private security guards and wailing relatives. Police did not release the name of the driver.

Late into the night, people argued loudly about the 14-year-old girl. Relatives of the boy said she left with her parents after police interviewed them. Relatives of the boy said whoever gave the girl the keys should face criminal charges.

"This 5-year-old baby is dead. You can't bring him back," said Kristal Green, 27, the boy's aunt.

She said she was with the boy at the hospital, his skinny body limp and tubes in his nose, when the doctor told the family he was dead.

"All we can do right now is pray," Green said. "We need prayers more than anything."

I am always reading about things like this happening. But it always seems that the person who is at fault always has someone or something to blame it on. In this case though I feel as if the 14 y.o. is to blame and should take it upon herself & Life.

of been driving at all she should of at least had the common sense to stop driving the FIRST time she hit the boys.
by kaela May 30, 2008 8:03 PM
If you actually READ the story you would see that he was not playing in the street. He was playing on the grassy area with trees. And regardless of where he was that girl knew better than to take the car, and to hit them TWICE! Though she shouldn'

In an age where all sorts of predators exist, its not safe for parents to live kids unattended.alot of things can go wrong like we have seen.let us pray for both families.
by L May 30, 2008 2:42 PM
Kevin Wilson was my little cousin.
by B May 30, 2008 1:12 PM
Kevon was a good kid, his mother and family really cared for him,he will be miss. You all should take in consideration that a chid is gone, and the family is grieving, please do not judge anyone, let the law handle it.God bless this family.

It is ridiculous some of the postings on this story, so cold, have some compassion. We live in such a "find the blame society". Both families will live with this tragic ACCIDENT, which could happen to anyone; so get off your high horses!

The poor little boy is the innocent victim of not one but two people behaving recklessly - the 14 year old girl, and mother who let a 5 year old child in/near a parking lot without adult supervision. People - please watch your children!!
by Wow May 30, 2008 12:03 PM
I dunno what's worse, the 14 year old "blank stare" or the 5 year old in the lot by himself.
by JASMINE May 30, 2008 12:01 PM
THE PEOPLE WHO LEAVING THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS I THINK YOU SHOULD MIND UR BUSINESS BECAUSE MY COUSIN JUST LOST A 5 YR OLD SON (BEING THE ONLY CHILD)!!! THOSE WHO HAVE US AND THEM IN THERE HEARTS WE THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!

May God have mercy on everyones' soul.

Sad, very sad, and so avoidable with just a little common sense. RIP young man.
by K May 30, 2008 11:09 AM
I feel for both families. You don't know the whole story so don't start throwing accusations out on the little boy's family. Show a little more consideration.
by Tim May 29, 2008 5:55 PM
I can understand a parent giving keys to a teenager to get things out of a car. I can also understand a teenager getting the keys by themselves and doing something irrational. I can not understand what a 5 year old boy was doing alone in a lot.
by a mom May 29, 2008 5:55 PM
It is very very sad worth that your children can not play outside without monitoring every second.the teenager who was driving should be charged as an adult..teenagers do what they want when they want now a days without justice.a 5yr old is gone...
by anne May 29, 2008 5:55 PM
I had 3 kids.At the age of 5, they were allowed to play in front of my house-on the side walk. They knew they weren't allowed to play in the streets.I'm seeing more and more of these parents letting kids play in the street,no adult supervision.
by Bilan May 29, 2008 5:07 PM
My heart goes out to Kina and her family. Kevon will surely be missed. For those of you who keep stating that the 5 year old should have been supervised, its not like he was crossing the street he was at his place of resident not in the road.Gt facts

Why is a 5 year old playing in a parking lot? Drive by shootings, child molesters, kidnappers or senile old lady...the result could be the same.
by insuranceagent May 29, 2008 4:28 PM
unfortunatly, parents of the girl are responsible, as far as insurance goes. My heart goes out to the parents of the little boy. I know the pain of loosing a child, though not in this manner. I also pray for the girls parents, rough times ahead.
by Tracy May 29, 2008 4:28 PM
VERY VERY sad situation, the girl knew better then to drive the car when she was ONLY supposed getting her books. This is not her parents fault at all its simply the 14 year olds and she should be punished for MANSLAUGHTER, because thats what this is.
by angel May 29, 2008 4:27 PM
If that was my kid that did the driving and killed someone then i would take them to jail myself. that girl knew that she should not have gotten in that car to take it for a drive. she was only suppose to go and get her books nothing more. CHARGE HER
by Eric May 29, 2008 4:27 PM
This is a very tragic accident. My prayers go out to both families. The girl made a very tragic mistake. I agree she should be punished - esp. since she ran off. One reason parents need to know where their kids are at all times.
by paulyc14 May 29, 2008 4:27 PM
Two people are in the wrong in this. The fourteen year old girl, and whoever was supposed to be watching the five year old child. I live in a complex, and I'm amazed when I see tons of little kids running wild in the parking lots.
by Mystery Man May 29, 2008 4:27 PM
All of you who are blaming the 14 y/o's parents are stupid. Its her fault, not theres. Americans are retarded, their favorite word everytime something happens is "sue". Get a life and have some personal accountability.
by Jim May 29, 2008 4:27 PM
Parents are always held responsible for the actions of their children, as they should be. Yes, raising children is difficult, but that is the JOB of parents. However, I don't believe their conduct was criminal activity, but rather civil obligation.
by Teri May 29, 2008 3:26 PM
HELLOOO Jamie, she sent her to the car to "get her books"...NOT to drive. This girl is 14 she KNOWS right from wrong, and getting in and driving that car was wrong and she KNEW it. No more bs about these idiot teens don't know right from wrong!!
by shateya May 29, 2008 3:19 PM
that was my lil baby i loved him so much it's just sad and stupid that this lil girl would do something like this i think someone should be faced on crimnal charges
by Leron May 29, 2008 3:08 PM
All kids do it is no excuse. I didn't do it. My neighbors kids haven't done it. This one kid did, and she should face the consequences - not jail for life mind you - but consequences.
by deontre May 29, 2008 3:07 PM
thats awful and she went here and caused nothing but trouble she should be charged.
by Ruby May 29, 2008 3:06 PM
What a tragic story...I would NEVER let my 5 yr. old play in a PARKING LOT of all places unattended. Unfortunately the 14yr old made a life altering decision, and she, not her parents should be punished-at 14 you know you are not allowed to drive!
by Pat May 29, 2008 3:04 PM
You can ask a million why's and what if's, but the little boy is gone and there is no bringing him back. Leave the criticism out, and just show respect for the one that is gone! Thats whats wrong with America today.
by reader May 29, 2008 3:04 PM
my prayers are with the family of the 5 year old.the 14 year old is old enough to know what is right and what is wrong. i hope that she gets punished for her actions.
by jamie May 29, 2008 1:51 PM
why would someone send a thirteen year old girl out in a car anyways i have a thirteen year old and she still aint driving!
by Linda May 29, 2008 12:31 PM
I am so sorry for both the families. The fourteen year is responsible. NO ONE ELSE for this accident! From this news brief she was going to a locked car to get her school books, she did ask to go drive which I am sure the answer would of been No!
by Britt May 29, 2008 12:30 PM
Why was this 5yr old out playing in the parking lot alone?? I realize she should have been driving this vehicle, but this child should NOT have been unattended...
