BROOKSVILLE — Two teenage girls face criminal charges for their roles in a schoolyard brawl at Central High School that ended with one of the students pushing an assistant principal, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

The girls, one 16 and the other 17, who are not being identified by the Times because they are juveniles, were arrested and booked into the Hernando County Jail on Tuesday.

Both students were charged with assault and battery on school personnel and disorderly conduct, while the 16-year-old girl also faces charges of battery and resisting and obstructing an officer without violence. The girls were released from jail later in the day to the custody of their parents.

According to the arrest report, the 16-year-old girl and a third, unidentified female student got into a verbal confrontation at the school about 7 a.m., before the start of school.

As the girls screamed at each other, the 16-year-old allegedly swung at the other girl and missed, but managed to grab the girl's ponytail.

The school resource officer at Central said hundreds of students gathered at the scene, watching the girls scream and swing and claw at each other as school staff members tried to break up the fight. The deputy and an assistant principal tried to pull the 16-year-old away from the fight and tried to lead her away to the school's front office.

When the girl resisted, the officer said she placed the teen in handcuffs and took her to the office. The girl repeatedly tried to continue fighting with the other girl, who was in a nearby office, according to the report.

Later, in the office, assistant principal Laura Kane told deputies that the teen had pushed her in the chest and shoulder area while trying to resume the fight.

Another assistant principal, Sue Lisk, said the 17-year-old girl had pushed her away during the fight as she attempted to help her friend, the 16-year-old.

why so these girls have to be called trash because they fight? and why is it that they come from screwed up families? chances are they were picked on in school and no one did anything about it so they eventually start to defend themselves.

and its not the kids fighting that makes it a "D" school, it is the teachers and school it self how dare you as a teacher blame it on the fighting, practice what you preach!!!!!!!

When I was in school, fights like that were like watching a wet t-shirt contest w/o water.Just send the little darlings to the Springer academy for troubled parasites. If they grad- gee-ate they would win a new 1963 trailer in cajun country with a view

Fights should not be allowed!!! ISS, OSS, whatever punishment is fine. They left out the whole middle of my previous comment. Just not arrest. And the point about my grandparents, is this is not a new and crazy thing. Kids can be dumb, it happens.

Kids with this much rage have screwed up family lives. They've probably had other anger issues on campus. There is no excuse for pushing an assistant principal to resume the fight. Expel them. Safe schools don't need trash like these girls.

thanks for not using these kids name its about time you exercised better judgement. wow you do have an editor

Typical Hernando County losers! This is why Jerry Springer is rich!

When I was going to school, girls NEVER got into fights. Is this a Drug problem?
by CHS Teacher Sep 5, 2008 10:07 AM
Good ol' Central High! Two years ago, we had seven fights in one week - SIX of them involved females. That's what 'D' schools do.
by Frustrated Sep 5, 2008 10:07 AM
Kelly do you get arrested if you fight in a bar, Wal-mart, or Disney? Of course. If you are at school to learn, then learn that it is illegal to fight everywhere. Why should others be at risk because of knuckle heads? This is why Deputies are needed!
by Parent Sep 5, 2008 10:07 AM
Kelly what do you think would happen if you allowed fights at school? You would enjoy going to school in chaos? When you granparents went to school they were also allowed to bring guns for show and tell!
by Concerned Sep 5, 2008 10:06 AM
School violence is at an all time high! Just think Alexander is trying to get rid of the Deputies at school. Can you imagine what would happen in our schools without a deputy. I would rather send my kid to Iraq then to school without a deputy!!

I remember in Jr High way back in the 70s--many girl fights, and they were brutal. I think there are LESS fights today, but more attention on them.
by kelly Sep 4, 2008 9:20 PM
Why did this article make the paper? Because they were arrested. Fights have always happened in school, no matter how many of us want to act like it is unheard of. They just didnt warrant being news. The school just handled the problem, without polic

Good riddance. You fight, you go to jail. See ya.
by kelly Sep 4, 2008 5:06 PM
And dont try to tell me that this is a sign of the times. Maybe the arrest is, but kids have been getting in fights in school (not all the time, but it happens)since my grandparents can remember.
by kelly Sep 4, 2008 5:06 PM
I know everyone will disagree with me, but I think it is crazy to arrest teenagers for fighting. I graduated in 1997 and cannot remember anyone being arrested for fighting. Now dont get me wrong, I dont think they should be allowed to do it, ISS Or

Wow! Welcome to Florida! What trash! These girls really know how to lower themselves with such violence. Where does all this anger come from? Wonder what their family life is like! Maybe Mom & Dad should get them professional help.
by John Sep 4, 2008 5:06 PM
What's the point of not using their names when you can go to the Sheriff's office website and look at their picture AND name. Doesn't make sense.
by Angry Mom Sep 4, 2008 5:06 PM
These girls sound like animals. I am glad they ar arrested and out of that school. My daughter goes to Central and I better not hear thoes animals are back in school.
by dxelady Sep 4, 2008 5:06 PM
What is wrong with these kids now a days with all the violance?. I remember the days when you would walk away from one another!!
by Taxman Sep 4, 2008 4:58 PM
"The girls are not being identified by the Times because they are juveniles, were arrested and booked into the Hernando County Jail on Tuesday." Hey Hernando Times, their arrests are public records. See the Sheriff's web site. You're SO sensitive.

So, here we go. What's going to happen when all the school resource officers are not at the schools?
