ST. PETERSBURG — People suspected in a Tampa armed robbery led police on a high-speed chase across the Howard Frankland Bridge late Sunday before crashing into a power pole in downtown St. Petersburg.

One person was extricated from the crashed white Chevrolet by fire rescue personnel at Fourth Avenue and First Street NE and taken away by ambulance, as Tampa and St. Petersburg police interviewed witnesses. Police later said that person, who was a passenger in the back seat, had died at the scene.

Police had one man in custody in the back of a patrol car and were searching for one more person, St. Petersburg police said. Junior Rodney, 17, of Orlando, was charged with armed robbery and aggravated fleeing and was booked into Pinellas County Jail.

Tampa authorities said the incident began with an armed, street robbery in the 2600 block of West Kennedy Boulevard shortly after 10 p.m. The suspects pointed a gun to the victim's head and demanded his wallet, police said. The victim described the robbers' getaway car as a white Chevrolet Malibu.

Tampa patrol officers spotted the car shortly thereafter and began a pursuit that topped 120 mph at times.

En route to St. Petersburg, Tampa police say someone in the car, once on Interstate 275, threw a short-barreled shotgun out of the car near the Lois Avenue exit. Once on the Howard Frankland, they also threw a wallet, mask and gloves out of the car.

A helicopter for Tampa police also joined the pursuit over Tampa Bay. As the chase moved down Pinellas County's portion of I-275, St. Petersburg police joined the chase and Tampa called off its patrol cars.

The chase moved onto I-375 and orders came from the helicopter to abandon the pursuit, as speeds were close to 100 mph as it neared surface roads, Tampa police said.

Joseph Greer, who was on his girlfriend's porch on Grove Street, watched the car come off of I-375 at a high rate of speed with two police officers following.

"They just came off the highway going incredibly fast. (Then) there was a loud bang and a bright flash of light," said Greer, 22.

Power was knocked out briefly at surrounding homes and apartments.

i go to oakridge high school and rodney is well known there,i just cant believe this. he was such nice guy. i cant believe he did that and the sad part is that the robbery was his moms boyfriends idea and he went along with it.

Rob i'm the victim, TPD never brought the suspects over into your neck of the woods. However they did a job well done by catching the suspects, if you read thoroughly you will see TPD called off chase it was the air patrol that stayed on them.

Rob, any intelligent person would put blame where blame is due. Those 3 felons had a history of this type of behavior and could have taken my life that day. Thank God he was with me and protected me and many other innocent victims. Thanks everyone.

I would like to thank the entire police staff for their diligent and hard work. Sorry about the outcome and may god be with their families.

I agree with Tracy its so sad to see how ignorant and heartless people really are. There was a woman who died in this accident and I wouldnt wish that type pf death on anyone. They were very wrong for committing that robbery but a life was lost!

I thought high speed pursuits were no longer allowed due to public safety concerns. This could have been a very tragic situation if the perps had crashed into a car full of innocent people rather than a power pole.

Lock them up, throw away the key. And Kim can makeup more excuses for people committing violent crimes all she wants.
by David Sep 8, 2008 2:00 PM
I feel sadness, that a good car was totaled. And also for the people that suffered without power for awhile.
by Tracy Sep 8, 2008 1:29 PM
The people that cmment on this site have to be the most ignorant people in the world. Sometimes I log in just to laugh, other times I am just saddened by the obvious anger you all must have built up inside.
by Vincent Sep 8, 2008 1:22 PM
Hey Rob, I wonder if you would still feel that way if someone robbed you or your family with a shotgun.
by Steve Sep 8, 2008 1:18 PM
The worst part of this is 2 of the CRIMINALS lived, and now some guy in Tampa is out some cash. How can you blame Tampa police...they were only following, they didn't tell them to drive to St. Pete
by Jen Sep 8, 2008 1:16 PM
Thugs like this drive dangerously whether or not the police follow them. Do you really think armed robbers care about the speed limit? Thanks to the police for risking their lives to get these guys off the street.

Another great day in St. Pete! They must have been heading to Mayor Baker's house for comfort and suppor. Tampa's police department certainly wasn't accommodating theses upstanding youths. So straight to the safety of St. Pete!
by Vincent Sep 8, 2008 10:00 AM
I wonder if they were running to St Pete because they know St Pete Pd is weak on crime.
by John Sep 8, 2008 9:59 AM
Thank god a real police department chased these guys first as St Pete never would have started a pursuit. This stuff happens in St Pete way more than you think but the difference is Tampa PD's admin supports the cops and have no tolerance policies.
by Steve Sep 8, 2008 9:59 AM
Are we supposed to let ARMED criminals flee without trying to catch them? Don't blame police, blame the criminals for endangering innocent people.
by mike Sep 8, 2008 9:59 AM
Thank you police for a job well done!!!
by Steve Sep 8, 2008 9:53 AM
The benefits of criminal activity!
by katy Sep 8, 2008 9:50 AM
woww thats soo sad :(
by Christine Sep 8, 2008 9:48 AM
Got what they deserved...they all should have died it would have saved the taxpayers money in the long run.
by Kim Sep 8, 2008 9:47 AM
If there were jobs out there maybe this would have not happened.
by mike Sep 8, 2008 9:46 AM
One lest criminal in this part of the world.
by Max Sep 8, 2008 9:46 AM
When are bad guys gonna learn not to run from the po-po?
by Rob Sep 8, 2008 9:45 AM
I live four blocks north of the crash scene and walked down to see it. Pretty scary stuff. Thanks Tampa PD for bringing your criminals over and endangering lives here. STAY IN TAMPA NEXT TIME! Don't engage high-speed pursuits, people get killed.
by pj Sep 8, 2008 9:44 AM
wow if one of these thugs died at the sceen should'ent the surviving thugs be charged with manslaugher, this thug is another reason why we should be the first state to outsource our inmate population to singapore great returns on your investment
by Willie Sep 8, 2008 9:44 AM
If the chase was called off why was there still 2 officers still chasing the car? They put anyone on the road at risk by not stopping the chase.
by tim Sep 8, 2008 9:44 AM
Thank God scores of innocent motorists weren't slaughtered in this city streets Hi-Speed police melee.
