Spring Hill man charged with shopping at Publix without paying

SPRING HILL — Mark this man down as getting a zero for the day.

On Friday afternoon, a man whom Hernando County Sheriff's Office described as "extremely intoxicated" entered the Publix at 4158 Mariner Blvd. and began to, well, take things.

According to a store loss prevention officer, his first stop was the produce department, where he grabbed an apple. He then went to the deli and snatched a package of kielbasa, then to the bakery for a loaf of Cuban bread and a box of cupcakes.

After dropping the cupcakes, the man then stuffed the box into the trash and headed toward the door. Just before leaving the store without paying for any of the items, he grabbed a bouquet of roses.

When sheriff's deputies later caught up with the suspect, identified as Terry Zakerowsky, 40, of Spring Hill, he had none of the items on him.

Things didn't improve much for Zakerowsky.

While the arresting deputy was waiting to book the suspect at the Hernando County Jail, he tried to kick out the rear passenger door of the deputy's cruiser and had to be taken out of the car and restrained, officials say.

Zakerowsky was charged with misdemeanor retail theft.
