PORT RICHEY — A doctor examined the baby and concluded this: "He will be expected to have severe loss of brain substance."

The 2-month-old boy was flown to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg more than a month ago with injuries to his head and legs. The man who had been caring for him, Jonathan Gene Gelb, was arrested Thursday on a charge of aggravated child abuse.

Gelb's relationship to the baby was not disclosed to protect the child's identity. It's not clear how authorities were alerted to the baby's injuries.

According to his arrest report, Gelb, 24, was the only one with the baby on Sept. 30 until he picked up his stepchildren, ages 5 and 7, from school.

He couldn't explain how the baby got hurt. He said only that at one point the baby began to gasp and wheeze, the report stated.

A doctor's exam, as well as a brain scan, found extensive damage: hemorrhaging over most of the right side of the baby's brain, hemorrhaging in the left side, hemorrhaging behind his eyes and two broken legs.

All signs, the doctor's report said, of shaken baby syndrome.

The doctor concluded the injuries could not have been inflicted by either of the other children.

Gelb, of 7838 Lilac Drive, Port Richey, remained jailed Friday in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Sheriff's spokesman Kevin Doll said the older kids have been taken from the home and placed in a relative's custody as a precaution. Their mother is not facing any charges.

The baby, he said, has been released from the hospital to a medical foster home.

Hopefully the medical professionals in this case ruled out all other possibilities BEFORE reaching the conclusion of "Shaken Baby Syndrome" which is tragically overdiagnosed. Scurvy, Rickets and OI should be ruled out. 2 mom: seek another opinion

Dont always believe what you see in print, I'm aware of these people and that child has underlying medical conditions that this reporter FAILED to mention. And these comments are not true of the incident....
