Tampa man killed in northwest Hillsborough crash

TAMPA — A Tampa man died Wednesday morning when the truck he was driving slammed into the backs of two other vehicles along W Hillsborough Avenue before veering off the road and colliding with a brick wall, authorities said.

The accident happened about 7:35 a.m. near the intersection with Countryway Boulevard. William Lamar McElveen, 56, was headed west in a Ford F-150 on Hillsborough Avenue in the outside lane. As the truck approached the intersection with Countryway Boulevard, it ran into the back of a Toyota Sequoia, which was then pushed into a Ford Expedition that was stopped in front of it, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

After hitting the two vehicles, the truck kept going through the intersection, then veered onto the northwest shoulder, where it collided with a sign post and slammed into the brick wall, troopers said.

McElveen, of Tampa, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he died. Neither of the other two drivers was injured, troopers said.
