Bicyclist shot in ankle during attempted armed robbery in St. Petersburg

A man was injured during an attempted armed robbery in St. Petersburg early Tuesday morning, police said.

According to police, the unidentified victim — a man in his late 50s — was riding his bicycle at the intersection of 9th Avenue S and 20th Street S around 5:15 a.m. when he was approached by another bicyclist.

That bicyclist pulled out a handgun and attempted to rob the victim, police said.

A struggle ensued, and the victim was shot in the ankle before the suspect rode away, police said.

The victim was treated at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, police said.

The suspect is believed to be in his late 20s, and 6 feet tall with a slender build. He was last seen wearing a stocking cap and track suit.
