Brooksville man arrested on child abuse charge

BROOKSVILLE — A 24-year-old Brooksville man was arrested Tuesday on a charge of child abuse after authorities found bruising on the back and buttocks of a young child in his care, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say Cory Steven McKenna injured the child, who is under 2 years old, on April 14.

An examination by a child protective team determined the injuries could not have been caused by a fall or active play, according to an arrest report.

McKenna told deputies that the child and two others were acting out and knocking things off shelves while playing. He said he grabbed the child off the floor with his left hand and struck the child multiple times on the buttocks with his right hand. He said his arm may have struck the child's back, deputies said.

McKenna was released Tuesday from the Hernando County Detention Center on $5,000 bail.
