Brooksville man charged in air conditioner repair scam

man charged in AC repair scam

Investigators had long suspected Shawn Denty of scamming Timber Pines residents. People had complained and even called a meeting with authorities, but detectives couldn't prove it.

Until now, they say.

Denty, who works for Cool Ducts Air Conditioning and Heating of Hudson, was arrested and charged with unlicensed contracting and grand theft by misrepresentation. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office conducted a sting over the last week. Surveillance and other evidence, they say, proved that Denty lied to a client about repairs an air conditioner needed and then told the client she could save money by paying $500 to his brother, George Denty. The unit, investigators said, was working properly and needed no repairs.

Shawn Denty, of Brooksville, was later arrested when he and his brother returned to Timber Pines and, authorities say, began to do work on the unit. His bail was set at $2,500.

Hernando detectives said they believe Denty may have victimized other people and asked that anyone with information call (352) 754-6830.
