Brooksville man tossed loaded gun out car window during chase, deputies say

LAND O'LAKES — A Brooksville man faces a gun charge after deputies said he tossed a loaded revolver out of his car window on Friday during a chase up U.S. 41.

The incident happened while Pasco deputies were pursuing Kenneth E. Gariepy, 51, of 6242 Zirkels Circle, according to a Pasco County Sheriff's Office report. Records show he was charged in Pasco last month with driving with a suspended or revoked license and fleeing and eluding. In Hernando, he has been arrested three times for failing to appear in court, once for violating probation.

During the chase, which occurred about 5:20 p.m. Friday, someone threw a gun out the passenger window of the car, the sheriff's report said. Deputies found the revolver lying in the road just north of Central Boulevard on U.S. 41. The gun was loaded and cocked and then was accidentally discharged, the report said. Fingerprints on the gun matched Gariepy's, the report said.

Gariepy was taken to the Pasco County jail on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He remained Monday at the jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
