Burglar targets mailboxes at downtown St. Petersburg post office

ST. PETERSBURG — Police are searching for a holiday Grinch they say rummaged through post office boxes late Wednesday.

Authorities got an anonymous call around 8 p.m. about someone loitering at the downtown open-air post office at the corner of First Avenue N and Fourth Street, said police spokesman Mike Puetz.

The caller thought the man was suspicious.

When officers arrived, they didn't find anyone. They did see several pieces of mail and opened envelopes strewn about from at least five or six pried-open post office boxes.

Puetz said it appears the suspect was searching for Christmas cards. It was unclear Thursday whether the person took any money, gift cards or other items.

"We think we have at least nine victims," Puetz said.

Authorities at the post office will reach out to the people who own the boxes, he said.
