Caregiver accused of helping herself to patient funds

NEW PORT RICHEY — A 34-year-old caregiver is accused of stealing $5,150 from an 80-year-old man, who has since died.

Candace L. Aster, of Holiday, was arrested Thursday and charged with scheme to defraud.

The family of the victim, who lived in New Port Richey, told authorities that Aster was the victim's caregiver and also took care of his finances. Aster often gave checks to the victim's daughter to sign, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office report. The daughter trusted Aster, so she signed them without looking at who they were to, the report states.

Aster wrote about 22 checks to herself between September 2009 and June 2010, the report said. Aster confessed she made mistakes because she was having "hard times," according to authorities.

Aster was released Thursday from the Pasco County jail on $10,000 bail.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction: Candace L. Aster, a caregiver accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a patient, does not hold a nursing license in Florida. The original version of this article, based on information from the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, misstated her occupation.
