SEFFNER — A man suspected of trying to rob a convenience store Tuesday night crashed his car into a pole as deputies chased the vehicle.
At 8:15 p.m., a clerk was told a man with a gun was about to enter the store near Paradise Drive and Clewis Avenue, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office reported.
As the man walked in and revealed his gun, the clerk drew his own. The suspect bolted.
The clerk had already called 911. Deputies arrived quickly and spotted the man run from the store and get in a Honda Accord.
A chase continued until the man's car crashed into a concrete pole just north of State Road 60 on Lakewood Drive. The suspect, whose name was not released, was taken to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition.
Deputies were trying to determine if the man matches the description of the "Seffner Bandit," who has committed dozens of robberies. They were also combing the chase route to find items he had tossed from the car.
