Clearwater cashier accused of stealing more than $21,000

CLEARWATER — A 31-year-old fast food cashier is accused of bilking her employers out of more than $21,000 by pocketing money from customers, authorities said.

Tiffany Jill Ranck, of 14617 Sunset St., Unit A, was charged with theft of property by employee, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia when she was arrested Thursday afternoon. On Friday, she was being held in the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $11,000 bail.

According to an arrest report, Largo police determined Ranck would ring up customers' meals as comp, or complimentary, purchases, then keep the cash from the sales at her job as a cashier at Checkers Drive-In restaurant at 14011 Walsingham Road.

An audit conducted by the restaurant's loss prevention manager found that Ranck had comped $21,600 worth of meals over an 18-month span.

When confronted by police, Ranck admitted to the theft and said she comped between two and six meals a day to pay her bills.

Police found a small amount of marijuana and a pipe when they arrested her, according to reports.
