PINELLAS PARK — A Clearwater man was arrested Thursday, accused of cashing counterfeit checks totalling nearly $6,000.

William L. Sedich, 25, was charged with uttering forged checks.

According to Pinellas Park police, Sedich cashed two checks at Bank of America at 10200 66th St. N between Feb. 1 and Feb. 7. They were written on a fake account attributed to a Miami realty company, arrest reports show.

Sedich cashed a check for $2,985 on Feb. 1 and another for the same amount on Feb. 7.

But Sedich's ruse was uncovered when he returned the following day, Feb. 8, and tried to cash a third check. Bank officials became suspicious by "some funny discrepancies" on the check, said Pinellas Park police Capt. Sandy Forseth.

"The third time was not a charm," he said.

Bank officials contacted the company and found out employees there had never heard of Sedich. They said the checks were fraudulent. Sedich fled the bank, leaving the check and his identification card behind, Forseth said. Thumbprints Sedich supplied to the bank when he cashed the checks also came back as a match to him.

Sedich is a registered sexual offender who was convicted of criminal sexual conduct in Michigan in 2003, according to the Michigan State Police sex offender database. Details about that case were not available Friday afternoon. He served a year in a Florida state prison after a 2007 conviction in Flagler County for failure to register as a sex offender, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
