CLEARWATER — Clearwater police are investigating how a 2-year-old girl nearly drowned in a backyard pool Friday afternoon.
Police said Charles William Gibbs, 39, was taking care of the girl at 1559 Sherwood St. and left her unattended for 15 to 20 minutes. At about 5:30 p.m., he found her in the backyard pool. The girl was unresponsive when Gibbs pulled her from the water.
A neighbor who was being guided by a 911 operator began CPR. Clearwater firefighters continued the CPR and revived the child, police said.
The child was first taken to Morton Plant Hospital, then flown to All Children's Hospital. She was listed in critical condition late Friday, police said. Police did not release her name.
No charges have been filed.
