Clearwater police investigating suspicious death

CLEARWATER — Detectives were investigating a suspicious death Monday afternoon at a shuttered gas station on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard.

Clearwater police received a call about 3:40 p.m. after a man walking through the property at 1840 Gulf-to-Bay Blvd. discovered the body near the gas pumps.

The property is located between a Taco Bell and a McDonald's, west of Clearwater High School and on the north side of the busy road.

The corpse has upper body trauma, said Clearwater police spokesman Rob Shaw. The body appears to be that of a homeless man about 60 years of age, he said.

According to Shaw, police know the man's identity but have not released it pending notification of next of kin.

It was unclear Monday how long the man had been dead.

Clearwater police detectives, the medical examiner's office and forensics investigators from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office were on scene Monday evening.
