Clearwater police seek two in armed robbery of taxi driver

CLEARWATER — Police were looking for two young men they say cut and punched a cab driver during a robbery Wednesday.

The men flagged down the cab driver near Roosevelt Boulevard and Alma Avenue about 1:30 a.m., police said. They told him to drive to Douglas Avenue and Russell Street, about 9 miles away.

Once there, the two men held a knife to the driver's throat and demanded money, police said.

The driver, John Agar, 40, of Tampa gave them some money and tried grabbing at one of the robbers as he left the cab. Police said the robbers punched Agar several times. He was cut by the knife during the scuffle.

The two men ran away, and Agar was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police described the robbers as black men between 18 and 20 years old wearing dark clothing; one had dreadlocks.

Police ask anyone with information to call (727) 562-4080.
