Clearwater woman charged in neighbor's hit-and-run death

CLEARWATER — A 35-year-old Clearwater woman was charged Friday in the hit-and-run death of her neighbor, a 78-year-old man who was struck by a car while walking his dog.

Police say Yvelise Bradley hit Edward Ortwein last month while Bradley was driving her 12-year-old daughter to school. Investigators say the collision occurred March 20 on the block where both neighbors lived — East Drive, a short residential road near Sunset Point Road and Highland Avenue in north Clearwater.

Ortwein was seriously injured and died several weeks later as a result of his injuries, police said.

Bradley is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. She was already in the Pinellas County Jail on unrelated charges of drug possession and leaving the scene of an accident in Hillsborough County.

In the days and weeks following the crash, Clearwater police canvassed the area, spoke with neighbors and handed out flyers soliciting information about the hit-and-run. An anonymous tip led them to begin investigating Bradley.
