Deputies arrest inmate who escaped from work detail Tuesday

An inmate who escaped from a Pinellas County Jail work detail Tuesday was arrested Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies said Johnathan Ray Jones, 29, was assigned to a work crew cleaning a baseball field behind the VFW at 4145 34th Street North in St. Petersburg. He walked away from the work crew, deputies said, and they began searching for him.

About noon Wednesday, deputies following a tip stopped a car that Jones was traveling in on 58th Street just north of 54th Avenue. He was arrested on a warrant for escape and transported to the Pinellas County Jail.

Jones was in the midst of serving a 364 day sentence on drug charges. Deputies said he had no prior history of discipline at the jail, and had been arrested multiple times since 2003, primarily for drug-related offenses.
