LARGO — A 45-year-old man accused of failing to seek medical attention for his dog after it developed several illnesses, including tumors and skin problems, was arrested Wednesday.
George Hale, who lives on Seminole Boulevard in Largo, told officers he found the dog, a shepherd and hound mix, in an abandoned mobile home in April and decided to take it home.
But the dog developed tumors on its stomach, ear infections, a skin problem and had chewed its back right leg "down to the tendon," an arrest affidavit shows.
Hale told Pinellas deputies he didn't take the dog to a veterinarian because he didn't have money. Instead, he said he purchased a shampoo for the dog. He also declined to turn over the dog to the SPCA because it would cost him $30.
Hale faces an animal cruelty charge.
He was booked into the Pinellas County jail, but was released on $150 bail Wednesday night.
