Deputies: Drunken man badly hurts inmate on way to Pinellas jail

ST. PETE BEACH— After being arrested and accused of trying to pick fights at a resort Saturday night, a 36-year-old intoxicated man kicked another inmate in a van on the way to the Pinellas County Jail, causing life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Leonard David Lanni Jr., 36, of St. Pete Beach, was drunk and belligerent at the Sirata Beach Resort at 5300 Gulf Blvd., pushing guests and guards, deputies said. Around 9 p.m., he was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge, according to a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office report.

While being taken to jail, Lanni kicked another inmate in the transport van, causing fractured ribs, cuts and a ruptured spleen, the report said.

The unidentified male victim was taken to a hospital where his spleen had to be removed. A doctor at Bayfront Medical Center said the injuries were "life threatening," according to the report.

Lanni now also faces a charge of aggravated battery and was held at the jail on $20,150 bail.
