LARGO — A 55-year-old man accused of shooting his daughter's fiance in the neck was arrested Tuesday morning.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, trouble began at the Caribbean Isles Mobile Home Park on Seminole Boulevard just before 7 p.m. when John Matthew Burrows, 46, and his fiancee, Patricia Groves, 34, were arguing over Burrows' drinking, deputies said. Groves' father, William Chalmers Jr., told them to stop and began arguing with Burrows.

Detectives said Chalmers threatened Burrows and pulled out a gun, prompting Burrows to retreat into a bedroom and shut the door. Chalmers followed him and stood outside the room.

His daughter tried to intervene by standing between her father and the door, but Chalmers fired through the door and struck Burrows in the neck.

Burrows was flown to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, the Sheriff's Office said.

Chalmers was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on an attempted murder charge. He was being held without bail.
