Deputies: Man squeezed infant, broke ribs because she would not stop crying

SEMINOLE — A man faces child abuse charges after deputies found that he gave "bear hugs" to an infant girl, breaking her ribs, because she would not stop crying, authorities said.

Brian Dana Peacock, 31, cared for the infant during the week of June 10, Pinellas County sheriff's deputies said. Sometime during the week, Peacock became frustrated when the baby would not stop crying.

He gave the baby girl "bear hugs" and pressed hard enough on her chest to cause 24 rib fractures, according to an arrest report. Deputies alleged that Peacock knew or should have known that the baby was in dire need of medical attention but did not seek treatment.

Another adult later took the baby to a hospital, officials said.

Following an investigation, Peacock was arrested Friday on charges of aggravated child abuse and neglect of a child. He was later released from jail on $60,000 bail.
