Deputies: Mother, teenager arrested after fight with machete, pepper spray

TAMPA — A 38-year-old woman used a machete to strike a 17-year-old girl who attacked her daughter, deputies said.

On Sunday afternoon, April Stallworth, 17, was accused of stealing a laptop from Shirley Aymee Berrios, 38, and her 16-year-old daughter.

Stallworth attacked the 16-year-old, and when Berrios intervened, Stallworth came at her with pepper spray, deputies said.

Berrios struck Stallworth twice with a machete, leaving her with two small scratches on her back, said Debbie Carter, a Hillsborough Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.

Before the attack, Berrios was using the machete to trim bushes near her north Hillsborough home, Carter said.

Berrios and Stallworth were arrested. Berrios is accused of aggravated child abuse. Stallworth is charged with two counts of aggravated battery.
