Deputies say Hernando teen threatened to "shank'' another student with a knife

BROOKSVILLE -- A 13-year-old student has been arrested at West Hernando Middle School after he allegedly pointed a knife at a fellow student and threatened to "shank'' him.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office gave this report: A physical education teacher told a deputy on Monday that a student had seen the teen take out a knife out and threaten another student with it.

The deputy talked to the victim who said that the teen had told him that he was going to "shank" him and took out the knife, extended the blade and pointed the knife at him.

The victim said the teen, whose name is being withheld because of his age, folded the knife and put it back into the pocket of his shorts and said, "I was only kidding."

The deputy said that the knife, when closed, is in the shape of a hand grenade and has a U.S. Army emblem on the front. The blade is about 2 1/2 inches long and when the blade is extended, the knife is 6 inches in length.

The teen was arrested and transported to the Hernando County Jail. Officials with the state Department of Juvenile Justice allowed the teen to be released to his parent.
