Thieves steal more than $6,000 in youth sport equipment

Someone broke into a Dover sports complex sometime Tuesday or Wednesday and stole more than $6,000 worth of athletic equipment belonging to a youth sports group.

Hillsborough County sheriff's officials issued a plea to the public Friday, seeking tips that might help them find whoever is responsible for the theft.

The break-in happened between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. Wednesday at the William Owen Pass Sport Complex at 1300 Sydney Dover Road, officials said. The thieves got into the complex by cutting pad locks on a set of roll-down doors.

Once inside, they removed $6,700 worth of sports equipment and concession merchandise, which belonged to the Dover Youth Sports and Activities Organization, officials said. The stolen items included Nike cheer shoes, a laptop computer and Under Armour cleats.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at (813) 247-8200. Tips can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477).
