DNA on cigarette butt links Pasco man to car burglary, deputies say

LAND O'LAKES — A thief broke into a Jeep parked on Bellehurst Loop in September and stole a pair of sunglasses. The robber left behind a Newport cigarette butt, which was sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for testing, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

The DNA from the cigarette matched Ricardo Kostyk, a 19-year-old who is on felony probation for burglary, authorities said. Kostyk, of 3222 Whitley Bay Court in Land O'Lakes, was arrested Friday and charged with auto burglary.

He is being held at the Pasco County jail in lieu of $5,000 bail. Kostyk, who works as a stocker at Wal-Mart in Land O'Lakes, denied entering the car. But he "admitted to smoking Newport cigarettes," a report states.
