Driver crashes while leading Clearwater police on chase

CLEARWATER — A 23-year-old felon is accused of striking two Clearwater officers' cruisers during a chase early Saturday that ended when a police dog tracked the man down, authorities said.

About 12:45 a.m., police found a stolen vehicle and tried to make a traffic stop near Kings Highway and Palmetto Street. Markeem Primm sped away, entering the Clearwater County Club before coming back onto the road and striking the cruisers, police said. No officers were injured.

The stolen 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse came to rest at a power pole on the north side of Palmetto Street, west of Highland Avenue. Primm ran away, throwing a stolen .40-caliber handgun, police said.

Two police dogs and their handlers found Primm in the back yard of a home in the 900 block of Ridgewood Avenue.

Primm faces charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, burglary, resisting arrest without violence, driving with a suspended license, fleeing police and a probation violation.

He was being held at the Pinellas County Jail Saturday morning
