Elderly man chews through duct tape after robbery in Gulfport

An elderly man was tied up with duct tape and robbed on Friday, police reported. The man was tied up for several hours before he chewed through the duct tape and called 911.

Gulfport police said Nathan Rewerts, 24, of Gulfport, was arrested later Friday in Pasco County.

Police said they were summoned to the 6000 block of Gulfport Boulevard S, where the elderly man had been robbed, on Friday evening. The man told officers that Rewerts, who the man knows, followed him into his home and tied him up. Police did not release the victim's name.

The man said Rewerts took his wallet and car keys and left in his 2013 Chevrolet Camaro. He chewed through the tape and freed himself after several hours. He was not injured.

Police used the On-Star feature in the Camaro to track it. Rewerts was apprehended by the Florida Highway Patrol and Pasco County Sheriff's Office at a truck stop on Interstate 275 and State Road 52.

Police said Rewerts was taken to the Pasco County Jail and faces extradition to Pinellas County, where he will face multiple charges.
