Authorities want to warn people about a scam that steals information from their computers by sending out fake emails that claim to be from the local county clerk's office.
The scam dupes people into opening an email that says the person missed a court date. An attachment in the email, if opened, forces computers to download a virus that tries to steal personal information. This type of file is commonly called a "Trojan Horse."
The Pinellas County Clerk of the Circuit Court & Comptroller says it sends notifications only through regular mail, and that jury summons or failure to appear notices will never be sent via phone or email.
