TAMPA — Humberto Delgado already stood accused of killing one police officer, pointing a pistol at another and carrying a concealed firearm.
On Thursday, a grand jury put its stamp on those charges, filing a four-count indictment against Delgado that included a new allegation: They say he deprived an officer of his weapon or radio.
Tampa police would not elaborate on the additional charge. A Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office spokeswoman said she couldn't comment yet either.
Delgado was arrested Aug. 19 and booked into the Orient Road Jail, where he remains without bail on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and carrying a concealed firearm.
Police say Delgado was pushing a shopping cart down N Nebraska Avenue about 10 p.m. when Tampa police Cpl. Mike Roberts radioed to dispatchers that he would stop a suspicious person.
The two struggled, authorities said. Dispatcher calls indicate Roberts' radio clicked in as if he were trying to communicate, but no words could be heard.
Police think Roberts tried to shock Delgado with his Taser. Then, police records say, Delgado gained control over Roberts and shot him as he lay on the ground.
Police say the bullet traveled from Roberts' shoulder into his chest through an unprotected area in his bulletproof vest.
Within minutes, police say, Roberts' sergeant arrived. Delgado pointed a gun at Sgt. Paul Mumford, then fled, police say. Within a half-hour, Delgado was apprehended while hiding behind a nearby house. Police say Delgado was armed with four firearms when he encountered Roberts.
On Thursday, attorneys and investigators met behind closed doors with jurors. They brought a poster board that showed a map of the crime scene, including the placement of Delgado's grocery basket and Roberts' police cruiser.
Roberts, 38, was an 11-year veteran of the Tampa Police Department and a married father of a 3-year-old boy.
