Hernando deputies capture escaped inmate after he left work detail

BROOKSVILLE — A Hernando County inmate who escaped from his assigned work detail on Wednesday has been taken into custody.

Joshua Holmes, 35, was seen on the back porch of a home in Masaryktown by a neighbor, who called police, according to a press release from the Hernando County Sheriff's Office. Deputies were dispatched immediately.

When deputies arrived, Holmes was on the roof and jumped off, escaping into nearby woods, according to the release. Deputies then brought in a K-9 unit along with a helicopter to aid in the search and contain the area, police said.

Soon after, they received another tip that Holmes was in a home a block over from where he was originally sighted, the release stated. Police searched the home and found Holmes in the attic. He who refused to comply, and after a struggle, fell through the ceiling and managed to jump out of a window before being detained, police said.

Holmes was treated on the scene for his injuries, then transported to a local hospital, the statement read.

Deputies say Holmes was arrested after he left the Northwest Solid Waste Management Facility, on Norris Bishop Loop, without permission about noon Wednesday, according to a press release by the agency.

Holmes, assigned to a work detail with two other inmates, was serving a sentence for grand theft auto, deputies said.
