Hillsborough deputies arrest 15-year-old they say tried to rob gas station

TAMPA — An intercepted phone call helped deputies catch a teen they say tried to rob a Shell station wearing a mask and bulletproof vest.

Gabriel A. Guzman, 15, was charged with attempted armed robbery and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

He walked into the station at 5935 Memorial Highway just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and pointed a gun at the clerk, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. The clerk wrested away the gun, which turned out to be a BB gun, and the teen ran, deputies said.

Later, a reserve deputy stopped a young man who appeared to match the suspect's description on a bike near the station, and noticed the teen's phone wouldn't stop ringing.

The deputy said he answered the phone with the teen's permission. On the other end, he heard someone who turned out to be Guzman say: "I am behind Murphy's Bar and I can't get out."

Helicopters, sheriff's dogs and deputies found Guzman hiding behind a garbage bin a couple hundred feet from the station.

  5. Bucs top Jaguars behind strong first half

There is a reason why the air in Tampa Bay is filled with playoff talk. If Thursday night's 12-8 Bucs preseason win over the Jaguars is any indication, it's also going to be filled with footballs thrown by quarterback Jameis Winston.

Doug Martin gets the Bucs’ only touchdown on a 2-yard run, squeaking past linebacker Telvin Smith in the first quarter. He has five carries for 30 yards.
