ODESSA — Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies are searching for two men who used a stolen day care van to ram a gas station so they could steal cash from an ATM.
Their plan didn't work, despite driving the van through the store front several times, eventually landing right on top of the ATM.
Just before 2 a.m. on Thursday, a Ford van was stolen from the Land of Learning Academy at 8809 Robson Street in Tampa. About 15 minutes later, a surveillance camera captured the same van backing into a Sunoco at 8402 Gunn Highway in Odessa. It shattered the glass so the two men could force their way inside.
But the ATM remained bolted to the ground and no items were taken from inside the store.
The men left the scene.
Investigators were unable to tell the race of the first man, but said he is between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10, 170 to 180 pounds and was wearing a black ski mask over his face, a long sleeve tan flannel shirt, and white and black high-top sneakers.
The second man, investigators said, appeared to be black and around 6 feet tall and weighs 180 to 190 pounds. He was also wearing a black ski mask over his face, gloves, a long-sleeve gray shirt, black gym shorts and gray Nike sneakers.
