Hillsborough deputies search for driver who left injured cyclist

TAMPA — Deputies were searching Sunday for a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash in Lithia that left a bicyclist injured.

At about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, the driver of a silver Hyundai Tiburon slammed into the rear of a Kia on FishHawk Boulevard near Lithia Pinecrest Road, deputies said.

The incident caused the Kia to spin off the roadway and strike Frederick Mathis, 28, of Brandon, as he rode his bicycle. Mathis fell to the ground and the driver of the Hyundai left the scene, deputies said.

Mathis was taken to Brandon Regional Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.

The Hyundai Tiburon was found abandoned around 3 p.m. at Boyette and Raulerson roads.

Investigators were trying to identify who was driving it. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at (813) 247-8200.
