Hillsborough deputies use stun gun on man who won't leave school

TAMPA — Hillsborough deputies say they used a stun gun Friday on a 45-year-old man who showed up at Westchase Elementary School, where his wife works, and caused a disturbance.

Deputies say that Thomas Leroy Durrance, an accounts manager from Tampa, was upset and refused requests by Westchase's principal to leave. He told deputies that either they let him walk across the street alone or they would have to shoot him, according to an arrest report.

Students were unable to leave the school because of Durrance.

The report says Durrance resisted when a school security officer tried to take him into custody and then tried to reach for the officer's gun. That's when deputies say they shocked him with a Taser gun.

Durrance was charged with trespassing on school property; causing a disruption at school; aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer, with violence. He has been released on bond.
