PLANT CITY — Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies identified the man wounded in a fatal shootout between two brothers.
George Terrell Long, 71, was shot in the shoulder during the dispute that broke out about 2 p.m. Saturday, the Sheriff's Office said. Authorities also reported that Joanne Varn, 61, witnessed the shooting but was not hurt.
The shooting at the Rocking V Ranch, 5501 Varn Road, stemmed from a simmering family argument over property that left 62-year-old Milton Varn and 66-year-old Perry Varn dead.
Long is Joanne Varn's husband, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Cristal Nuñez said Sunday. Court records show Joanne Varn and Milton Varn divorced in 2008.
The Sheriff's Office did not release any more information Sunday about the events leading up to the shooting.
Property records list their father's estate as the owner of the ranch. Lamar "Ed" Varn died in 2012 at age 90. According to his obituary, he "loved his ranch . . . and worked very hard to maintain the cattle operation he inherited from his father."
The ranch's Facebook page says it offers "outdoor weddings, company picnics, horse boarding, trail riding and much more."
