HUDSON — A Pasco County man is accused of severely beating his girlfriend's dog and stabbing it in the face.

Houston Edward Neil Spencer, 25, of 12906 Sunhill Circle in Hudson was arrested Tuesday on a charge of felony cruelty to animals, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

Spencer's girlfriend, who was not identified in the report, heard whimpering coming from the garage of her home at 7104 County Club Drive in Hudson, she told deputies. When she entered, she saw Spencer holding her dog by its collar with one hand and a knife in the other. The dog, she said, was standing in a puddle of blood.

Spencer then ran out of the garage, leaving the knife behind.

Later, deputies responded to Animal Emergency of Pasco in Port Richey and found the dog with a stab wound to its face and coughing up blood from internal injuries, the report said. Deputies then went to the home of Spencer's girlfriend, where they saw blood and the knife on the garage floor, said Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Melanie Snow. They arrested Spencer.

When the dog, a large male mixed breed, arrived at the emergency clinic, it was in "serious, but stable" condition, assistant manager Jacque Chamberlin said.

"He had some wounds that could have become life threatening, but since (the family) sought out medical care quickly, they were able to be managed," Chamberlin said.

The dog was treated and released back to its owner, according to Chamberlin.

Spencer was being held on $5,000 bail at the Pasco County jail.
