Hudson teen accused of fracturing baby's skull

HUDSON — A 17-year-old girl is accused of fracturing a baby's skull.

The 11-month-old boy's injury was caused by blunt force trauma, a Pasco County Sheriff's Office report states. The injury happened June 27. The child's skull was fractured, but it was not yet clear if the boy also suffered brain trauma, the report stated.

The teenager, Nicole K. Buffington, told deputies she didn't hurt the child. She said she laid him down for a nap, took a shower and checked the baby, whose head "appeared swollen," the report said. A witness at the Hudson home told the Sheriff's Office that she heard the baby "fussing" and heard Buffington pleading "with the victim to go to sleep," the report states. The witness said she heard a "pop" sound and noticed later the baby's head was swollen and bruised.

Buffington was arrested Friday and charged with aggravated child abuse. She was taken into juvenile custody. Due to the nature of the charges, authorities did not disclose the relationship between Buffington and the child.
