LAND O'LAKES — On Sunday morning, deputies say, a nurse's assistant sat in her station at the county jail, opened her agency laptop and showed off a newfound skill to co-workers: that she could hack into email accounts of the Sheriff's Office's top brass.
Diedre Devonne Fitzgerald, 24, demonstrated for them how she could access the email accounts of director of medical services Dalia Hernandez-Gibson, the agency's second-in-command, Maj. Ed Beckman — and even Sheriff Chris Nocco.
Word spread and Fitzgerald was called into an interview with detectives. There, a report states, she admitted to hacking into the accounts to find confidential material and showed detectives how she unlocked passwords.
Just shy of two years on the job, she was fired and arrested Tuesday morning on charges of crimes against a computer user.
Fitzgerald of Spring Hill was released less than four hours later on $15,000 bail.
"The Pasco Sheriff's Office will hold its members accountable for their actions," said Nocco in a written statement.
