Land O'Lakes retiree accused of having child porn

LAND O'LAKES — A 62-year-old retiree is accused of owning a collection of child pornography. Some of the children — boys and girls — in the photos and videos were as young as 7 and were shown being sexually assaulted by adults, authorities said.

Cristy Brandstedter, of 21403 Preservation Drive in Land O'Lakes, was arrested Thursday morning. He is charged with 10 counts of possessing obscene material depicting sexual performances by a child. Those 10 separate charges were for videos found on his computer, said Chuck McMullen, special agent supervisor with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which investigated the case with the Pasco Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

A report from the Sheriff's Office said the investigation began in July. From that date, Brandstedter — a former president of his homeowner's association at The Preserve at Lake Thomas — was seen in possession of 133 files of photographs and videos depicting child pornography, the report states. McMullen would not say what led tipped off investigators to Brandstedter. He said detectives are working to identify the children in the materials. McMullen said it does not appear as though the children are from the Tampa Bay area.

Brandstedter is being held at the Pasco jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Security experts say small mom-and-pop stores in high crime areas are easy targets for robberies and typically don't have the budgets for extra security measures. [TONY MARRERO/Times Staff]
