Pinellas teacher faces additional child porn charge after images found on school laptop

LARGO — A sixth-grade social studies teacher who was arrested last month after police said they found child pornography on his personal computer now faces a new charge after investigators said they found more of the illegal images on his school laptop.

Robert James Plotkin, 57, was arrested March 28 on 10 counts of possession of child pornography and one count of tampering with physical evidence. He was released from the Pinellas County jail after posting $402,000 bail.

The Pinellas County School District also placed him on unpaid leave from his job at Clearwater Intermediate, a dropout prevention middle school where he had worked since 2012.

Plotkin was arrested on a new count of possession of child pornography on Friday, according to Largo police.

PREVIOUS STORY: Largo police: Pinellas school teacher arrested on child pornography charges

After his arrest last month, Largo police said the school district handed over two school-issued laptops he used at Clearwater Intermediate. A forensic analysis found that there were child pornography images stored on one of the computers, police said. Police said they have no evidence that Plotkin viewed the images during school hours.

The investigation into the teacher started when police were called to Plotkin's apartment March 15 after his roommate reported that she found child pornography on his personal laptop.

The roommate told Plotkin she had called the police. Plotkin then threw his laptop in a lake near his apartment at 225 Country Club Drive, police said. When officers arrived, Plotkin told them his computer was in the lake. He then retrieved it for them, police said.

Plotkin was again booked into the county jail, where he was being held late Friday in lieu of $100,000 bail.
