Man accused of exchanging gunfire with Largo police officer arrested

LARGO — Deputies arrested the man Friday morning who ran away from authorities Thursday night after exchanging gunfire with a police officer.

Largo police officers arrived at 6301 144 St. N about 9:30 p.m. to arrest Terry Lamar James, whom they believed committed two previous home invasion robberies with a firearm. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office also responded since the house is within its jurisdiction.

Deputies and officers surrounded the property. At about 11:15 p.m., James ran from the back of the house. A Largo officer and James exchanged gunfire, police said.

The officer was not hurt, but police said James ran off.

Deputies arrested him hours later. He faces two counts of home invasion robbery, police said.

The sheriff's office is investigating the shooting between James and the officer, who had not been identified.

The officer was placed on paid administrative leave.
